YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES
Dealing With Injured Youngsters-A
Holistic Approach
In treating youngsters with sports injuries I try to
deal with the whole person, not just the physical in-
jury. My first interview with the young patient in-
cludes questions about brothers, sisters, grades,
parents, the school year, activities, interests outside
of sports, how much they really enjoy the sport they’re
in, what position they play, and so on. I get a fix on
their anxieties, their attitude toward coaches, their
feelings about winning and losing, and peer pressure
This is one reason I prefer to see these youngsters
without their parents in the room during the first
interview. For example, one boy’s father told me that
his son was interested only in baseball-but when I
talked to the youngster alone he told me, “I’d rather
play golf than baseball.”
Only when I have built a good foundation do I
start discussing the youngster’s specific injury in
terms of seriousness, choices of treatment, timing of
return to play, and so on. I make it clear to youngsters
that this is not just something for other people to
decide, that they must take responsibility for dealing
with the injury-and if it does not feel right to them,
they should not play, regardless of what I say. That’s
not easy when you’re dealing with a teenager, but it’s
much easier if a rapport has been established.
